The end of the fall semester was a whirlwind. Establishing and then executing my senior thesis proved to be the toughest design project I have ever undertaken. With the expanding role of designers in new media design, I looked to explore and understand how we got to where we are today.  The final senior presentation went off with a bang, and I was very proud of the final outcome. It was recently featured over at Behance and noted as, “Superb design and wise advice in @courtnycotten ’s look at Human Computer Interaction”.

Senior Development plan – Augmented Reality

DESCRIPTION -

The first step to establishing my project is establishing a timeline by which I can visually gauge the history of AR. This timeline will become the cornerstone of the project. I will be concentrating on both theories as well as technologies surrounding the development of AR applications.

The actual piece I will be designing is to consist of a flash application that will allow the viewer to explore a multitude of information in an immersive way. Since the concept of AR is cutting edge, and known facts and developments cannot easily be represented on a standard timeline, my application will present data in a way that dynamically moves like the flow of time. By interconnecting paths of development we can see the outcomes of specific technologies and/or theories. This sort of “time sphere” of information can be accessed and drilled down at will depending upon what the user wishes to explore.

WWW – Senior Project Pitch

A graphic design capstone is a very complicated process – planning how that process will unfold deserves a significant amount of consideration.

The very idea of a graphic design capstone project is a very interesting concept. The biggest thing I struggled with, as I decided on a topic, was whether my idea would implement graphic design, and pursue an issue outside the field, or whether it would be about design itself, and aim to make waves within the design community. Most projects do the former. We are lucky in this way — because design really can be used to solve just about any problem — but there is the concern that this strategy will be of no relevance to the actual field of study. I still don’t know quite what to make of this dilemma. I have tried to meld the two directions with my project, but I am unsure whether it will end up being that much more effective because of this, or if it will fail because I never decided which path to pursue. I guess it’s still too early in the process to know.
